Friday Dojo Discernments
Hi all!
Welcome to this week's installment of Dojo Discernments. Remember to check in on your loved ones and keep em close!
Skill I'm Practicing
Skill Transfer
There's a way to transfer a large amount of skill or knowledge into other areas of your life.
Treat the areas you're not so good at, like the areas that you are really good at.
I stumbled on this idea as I was getting stuck on my opponents upper body frames as I was guard passing. When I started treating their arms like I would in wrestling hand fighting, I was finding easy ways through.
If you struggle with something, try approaching it as something you're good at. You will pour your knowledge of that subject into this one literally.
You will be accessing a part of your brain that is wired well for one skill and use that to perform at this skill. Rather than trying to learn foreign patterns, build on the strong ones you already have and skill transfer into new fields.
Quote I'm Pondering
"Institutional Inbreeding"-John Bumpus
Used to describe a rule that is justified by another rule that exists because the previous person said it that way because the person previous did it that way. Never being able to adhere to rhyme or reason. There are quite a few institutions that behave in such a way but no need to name names.
This quote is attributed to one of the most impressive men I've ever met, who has recently founded a precision rifle instruction company The Cadre.
What I'm Training
Ground Force Tension: The amount of power you are pulling from the ground at a given time.
Where do you get that drive you use to stand or to propel yourself forward? The ground. Why do some people land that hop or lunge while others stumble? Ground Force Tension.
Why do some people have such good base as they sit, while others are flimsy and easily pushed over? Ground Force Tension.
Pull from the floor and let that connection and strength spiral up through your body.
Extremely important in healing your injuries. Look into it.
Book I'm Reading
Ray Dalio's Principles: Life and Work
This is a book I try to visit annually because it hits so hard everytime. This time around was extra special as an old student returned the copy I gave to him years ago filled with notes and scribbles in the margin. What a treat!
If you don't want to read the book. Here is a miniseries based off the book you can watch!
My Goal
To give you more tools in your tool box. May one of these bullets resonate and be an added tool to your tool box. As I teach, may you take one tool and add it to your belt.
We Broke the WNO record for most ticket sales for a single athlete ever! Thank you all for your tremendous support!
Snuggle Bug Instructional is live. I priced it a lot higher than the other courses because I value it as so. If the membership option is more doable for you, check it out!
