Friday Dojo Discernments
Hi All!
Prayers to all affected by the LA Fires
Here is your weekly dose of Dojo Discernments
Highly suggest reading the broswer version until email gets cleaned up!
A Lesson I Learned from Weightlifting
I stole the idea for this graph from a barbell lifting program I once did. It was fascinating to see at the time. Experts didn't need to train all that much! They were filling that extra space in with accesory work. Same for the jiu-jitsu athelte, your white belt version risks overtraining. The blue belt version gets stronger. The purple belt is on the quest to kill everything in the gym. Then you begin to taper off at the upper belts. Maybe you still are on the mats a ton, but you just don't have as many killer rounds. You are focusing more on accesory work.
Pre/Post Training Thoughts
Glycogen is the primary source of energy stored and used for performance and recovery. For trained athletes, which if you're reading this you are, the average storage amount is 500-700 grams. A 90 minute training session can deplete 40-60% of glycogen storage. Which leads to the questions, "How full is your tank before you come to practice? How quickly do you refuel after?"
Potentiation vs Expenditure
Potentiation is the priming of the mind and body to perform better in both the short and long term.
Expenditure is the use of energy and stamina during training or competition.
In jiu-jitsu, low potentiation and high expenditure can lead to fatigue, overtraining, and injuries if not managed.
Training is about potentiation. Competition is about expenditure.
For Future Coaches
Watch the rolls happening in your room. In the errors and problems encountered by your students, lies your next lesson plan. This solves the when and why of what you are going to teach.
I learned this principle of "Neccesity" from taveling to 10th Planet Atlanta to train under Sean Applegate.
