Dojo Discernments
Hi all!
Here is your weekly dose of Dojo Discernments where I share nuggets of thoughts I've gained from the mats this week.
What I'm Practicing
Rest:
Even in the most stressful of times. You can find rest, repose, and peace. Whether in a competition match, responding to an emergency situation, or just in the daily toll of life, be able to identify when there is a pocket of rest available and take it.
Resilience comes from rest and endurance. Allow yourself to process it and be ready for the next challenge.
How I'm Preparing
Valleys and Peaks:
There's going to be cycles in your training. Right now I have a lot of homework to do from my previous matches. I know what it takes to be the best in the world and I know it doesn't come overnight. By giving myself the time freedom to get there, I can incrementally work there. If I were to try to work myself there sooner than I was ready I wouldn't get there.
Are there times in your training you ease off the gas pedal for new higher peaks? The best do so, so maybe you want to give it a try. That being said, there's always a way to improve, even if you are in a valley.
What I'm Processing
Anxiety:
The first best way to allow anxiety to pass is to acknowledge it is there. Rather than ignoring this suffocating feeling, acknolwedge it's presence and exhale. Understand it's just chemicals in your body, allow it to pass, then ask why it was there in the first place.
If I don't acknlowedge it's there in the first place though, I'll stay trapped. If acknowledging it's there isn't enough, write it down, or share it with someone else. Reach out.
What I'm Watching
Freestyle Wrestling: Spencer Lee Vs. Masanosuke Ono
Can't hyperlink the match because of Flo but here is an Ono highlight reel to show some of the overtie snaps, downblocks, sprawls, and underhook attacks that won him the WNO Match! Others think the match was a stalemate but I was on my toes the whole time!
What I'm Teaching
The most fundamental principle that is applicable to a move, because it is the most important component to success. Both to the white belt and to the black belt.
