Dojo Discernments

What is Discernment
Discernment: the ability to understand, perceive, and judge things clearly, especially when they are not obvious. The ability to sift through all the infromation that is being thrown at you and choosing what's important. Like a hound dog that is taking in the smells and deciding which way to go.
On the mats, it could be trying to identify what stance your partner is in, or where your partner's weight distribution lies. Then consequently, what guard should you be playing, or how you should off balance.
In a spiritual or religious context, it can involve reflection, prayer, and asking for wisdom; seeking God's will in a given matter.
The better your discernment, the better your decisions.
How I Think About the Game
Laws, Principles, Heuristics, Concepts, Strategy, Tactics, Systems, Technique
When I learn
When I train
When I teach
In that order
The amount of time I spend on these is in cascading order from left to right.
Learn this algorithm to mastery in jiu-jitsu.
Study all the greats, they employ the same.
The saddest sight is someone who's only spent time in the technique.
A practitioner stuck in techniques becomes predictable, rigid, and lost once outside their comfort zone. They can't adapt. Mastery of Laws and Principles enables you to problem solve and innovate endlessly.
This mindset applies to all skill-based disciplines.
My Favorite Practitioner
Aaron Milam, amongst the first of Danaher's black belts, 6th Degree Black Belt, owner of Renzo Gracie Portland, silent individual, has the most ingenious & devestating game I've ever seen. He's nicknamed the flying squirell and he fights like it. Imagine having a squirell climb around your body biting and cutting you up; That's Aaron Milam. Here's some of my favorite clips of his, which like everything about him, can be hard to find.
Quote I'm Pondering
"Within an action the beginner considers a mistake, the master may see brilliance. "-unknown
