Dojo Discernments
Hi all! here is your weekly dose of Dojo Discernments where I share nuggets of wisom earned on the mats.
Quote I 'm Pondering:4 Types of Awareness
-
The person who doesnât know, and doesnât know that they donât know
â They are ignorant. Avoid them or teach them. -
The person who doesnât know, and knows that they donât know
â They are teachable. Help them. -
The person who knows, but doesnât know that they know
â They are unaware. Guide them. -
The person who knows, and knows that they know
â They are wise. Follow them.
What I'm Learning: Match Reflections
We lost a narrow split decision last weekend. We lost because we didn't take into account what the actual task at hand was. The match was a CJI 3 5 minute round format and I competed as if it was a single 15 minute period. Here's to prepping for the actual task at hand.
You can watch the whole match here on FLO and make your own summarization.
What I'm Learning
I had the privelege of taking a class from Jean Jacques Machado this week at Training Center LA. The refinement and simplicity of technique was clearly visible from the master. What I took away mostly though was that
Jiu-Jitsu is strength that is to be shared.
Teaching Secret: Entrainment
In Neurology entrainment is the art of influencing brain waves to match the wavelengths of a rythm beat, sound, or light. I use this knowledge to manage my epilepsy.
I also use this knowledge to pass down and convey information. Where as some share techniques, I try to entrain my athletes as I want them to unlock their potential to preform.
Technique Meaning: Makikomi Roll
Not a sushi roll, but a technique otherwise known as the fat man roll or the Peterson's roll. What creative english names! đ This turtle counter technique is brilliant and I knew that there was so much more in this techniques name as there often is with judo terms.
Makikomi translates to "coil". Makes sense when it is related to moves like "octopus guard". I'll be exploring this idea of "coil" a lot over the next period of study. RDLR, DLR, throws, so many appplications...
If you found any bullet particularly intriguing, let us know in the comments!
